What wallcovering covers
Wallcovering punishes anyone who does it occasionally. Grasscloth shows every seam and every shading difference between bolts; wide-width commercial vinyl needs a genuinely flat, properly primed substrate or it telegraphs everything underneath.

Where wallcovering goes wrong
Grasscloth shades between bolts, so material is sequenced and reversed deliberately rather than hung in whatever order it comes out of the box. Wide-width commercial vinyl telegraphs anything left underneath it, down to a skim ridge you cannot see until the light crosses the wall.
So the substrate gets skimmed flat and primed before a single drop is hung, and layout is set with a laser rather than eyeballed off a corner that is not plumb. Removal is handled the same way, taking the paper off without wrecking the wall underneath it.
