Where luxury wallcoverings earn their place
Grasscloth and wide-width commercial vinyl are unforgiving materials. Grasscloth shades between bolts and shows every seam; wide-width vinyl telegraphs any imperfection in the substrate underneath it.
Both reward a properly skimmed and primed wall and installers who hang paper every week rather than every other year.

Grasscloth, vinyl and the substrate under both
Natural grasscloth is a plant fibre, so it shades from bolt to bolt. That variation is the material behaving normally rather than a defect, and it gets managed by sequencing and reversing drops during layout rather than fixed afterwards.
Wide-width commercial vinyl behaves the opposite way. It is dimensionally consistent and hard-wearing, but it telegraphs anything left underneath it, which is why the wall gets skimmed and primed before a single drop goes up.

Either way the preparation is written into the scope alongside the product, because the two are not separable. A coating only performs to its data sheet if the surface underneath it was prepared the way that sheet requires.
